GOSHEN TOWNSHIP — Clermont County has seen more teens die on its roads in teen-driving fatal crashes than any other Greater Cincinnati county this year. And it just got worse.

SPECIAL REPORT

Jennifer Weckner is the 16th teenager killed on Tristate roads this year. One of every five fatal area crashes has involved a driver under 21. Our special report last Sunday examines what's happening. Go to Special Report
Jennifer Weckner, 19, of Blanchester, died Monday in a crash on Ohio 132, having failed to yield at a stop sign at Shiloh Road at 9 a.m. Her vehicle collided with an oncoming Ford Explorer driven by Davis Field, 36, of Pleas ant Plain, the Ohio State Highway Patrol said.

Mr. Field was treated at Bethesda North Hospital and released. Ms. Weckner was pronounced dead at the scene. Both were wearing seat belts.

Clermont now accounts for six of the 13 local crashes this year in the Tristate in which teens have been killed. In all, 16 teens have been killed in those 13 crashes. Three of Clermont's six, including Ms. Weckner, were driving alone. The other three killed were passengers.

Clermont police sources say the county is particularly dangerous because there are many winding, tree-lined and poorly lighted roads. Also, residential growth has significantly increased traffic on major thoroughfares. Ohio 132 runs the length of the county, north from New Richmond on the Ohio River to Goshen Township near the Warren County line.

“Kids drive too fast, and inattention, when you combine with the winding roads out here, I don't know how we're going to crack it,'' Clermont County Sheriff A.J. “Tim” Rodenberg said Tuesday, just hours after speaking to a group of students at Clermont Northeastern High School about driving safety.

“We tried enforcement, and that's worked,” he said, “but that's not the total an swer because you can't have enough deputies.”

Ms. Weckner was driving a 1988 Chevrolet Beretta northwest on Shiloh when she tried to enter Ohio 132 into northeast traffic and the collision occurred. Her vehicle overturned. The crash, which remains under investigation, was the 19th fatal crash in the county this year, down from 38 last year. In 1999, four fatal crashes involved teen drivers.

In addition to Ms. Weckner, the teens killed this year are:

Becky Menard, 15, of Clark Township, Brown County, killed June 27 on Leonard Road in Bethel. Her boyfriend was driving.

Tiffany Allen, 16, of Bethel, killed Aug. 3 on Ohio 125 in Mount Holly. Her boyfriend was driving.

Charlie Weaver, 19, of Wayne Township, killed Sept. 18 while driving on Woodville Pike in Goshen.

Amanda Loudin, 19, of Goshen, killed while driving Sept. 11 on Jackson Pike in Stonelick Township.

Gene McIntyre, 18, of Jackson Township, killed July 26 in the township. His friend was driving and was not charged. A teen in an oncoming car was.
