If the Ohio Student Mock Election is any indication, Texas Gov. George W. Bush will be the next president of the United States.

        More than 770 teachers across Ohio requested ballots from PBS as part of the network's effort to involve students in the political process.

               About 117,000 students in grades 4 through 12 voted across the state this week for presidential candidates, state senators, state Supreme Court justices, congressional representatives and other issues.

        In Lebanon City Schools, the hallways and walls were covered in colorful election signs. Students voted in the cafeteria, not far from a sign that blared, YOU CHOOSE. VOTE. MOCK ELECTION.
       

Parental influence
               “I think it's neat because we can't vote in the real election but we can vote in the schools,” said 17-year-old student Andrea Smith. “I like that we have a say.”

        Andrea cast her vote for Mr. Bush, largely influenced by her parents, she said. She likes Mr. Bush's stands on moral issues and school vouchers.

        Mike Doughman, 17, also a supporter of Mr. Bush, said he's looking forward to seeing how the results will compare with those in the real election.

        “It'll be neat to see what the outcome is and to see what our school thinks and what the adults think,” he said.
       

Other area schools
               Steve Poitinger, Lebanon High School history teacher and curriculum leader, helped organize his school's election. But the students did much of the work choosing the election format, publicizing the election and tabulating votes, he said.

        Some other local schools that participated were the E.H. Greene Intermediate School in the Sycamore School District, Fairfield Intermediate of Fairfield schools and Springdale Elementary in the Princeton School District.

        After the polls closed Thursday, Lebanon students and schools across the state called in their results to a toll-free number set up by PBS.
