Two TV stations refuse GOP attack on Portune
Airing denied for condom ad in county commission race

The Cincinnati Enquirer
Two television stations are refusing to run the Hamilton County Republican Party's latest attack ad against Democrat Todd Portune, who is trying to unseat Bob Bedinghaus on the county commission.
The ad shows a married couple looking at the Republican Party Web site liberalportune.com.'' The spot shows a packaged condom with a label: Todd's Freebies.
Bill Fee, general manager of Channel 9, said the spot is inappropriate because children might see it.
I turned it down because it violated the standards of WCPO, said Mr. Fee, who estimated the party had secured about $10,000 worth of air time for the spot.
Channel 19 also decided not to air the commercial, while Channels 5 and 12 are running it.
The ad, which started Friday, was scheduled to run at all hours of day and night.
Joe Deters, chairman for the county's Republican Party, said viewers see much worse on daytime soap operas.
I don't get it, Mr. Deters said. It doesn't show a condom; it shows a package. I think there is a clear difference between the two.
The ad is the second in a series, showing a husband and wife looking at the Web site.
The first claimed that Mr. Portune supports gay marriages, opposes teen curfews and wants crooks to turn in their guns and get sneakers instead of jail time.
The latest spot shows the same couple looking at new information on the Web site that Mr. Portune supports taxpayer-funded distribution of condoms and so-called partial-birth abortions.
Mr. Portune voted in 1995 against a motion to ban the distribution of condoms by the city health department. Mr. Portune said he supports abortion rights but has done nothing to change state law making late-term abortion illegal.
