Boys regional soccer roundup

Lakota West nips East 1-0 in shootout

By John Schutte
Enquirer contributor

Benched eight games ago, goalie Matt Kaplan was called to duty in a shootout in the most important game of the season. Kaplan responded with a save on the first shooter, Julio Falconi, to pave the way for Lakota West's 1-0 victory over Lakota East in the regional finals at West Carrollton High School.

“I've been waiting for a chance to get back at my old school,” Kaplan said. “I read the shot and was able to get a piece of it.”

West was successful on all five attempts against Craig Salvati, Ohio's career leader with 42 shutouts. Kenney Bertz sealed the outcome on the fifth shot.

For coach Steve Cummins, this marks his first regional championship in five tries.

“We showed great composure on our shots, and everyone remained relaxed,” Cummins said.

Lakota West will to play Worthington Kilborne in the state semifinals Tuesday at Troy.

The teams played back and forth in overtime, with West having the only significant chance to score. In the second overtime, Kevin Noschang had a breakaway attempt, but Salvati easily managed to save his 15-yard shot.

Shootout goals: LW—Patterson, Fuller, MacKenzie, Raulin, Bertz; LE—D. Farrell, Salvati, K. Farrell. Records: LW 14-2-4, LE 15-4-3.

        • Madeira 2, Tipp City Bethel 1 (OT), Division III at Centerville — Madeira's Nolan Bowers scored on a direct kick just outside the box before the goalie was set, with 1:29 left in overtime.

Sean Hassman's goal on a pass from Phira Lorth with 25 minutes to play tied the game 1-1.

        Goals: M—Hassman, Bowers. T—Plunkett. Records: M 16-4-1, T 14-4-2.

        • Turpin 2, Kettering Alter 1, Division II at Lakota East — Senior Brad Gilpin and junior Wes Ernst scored for Turpin in the first half.

        Goals: T-Gilpin, Ernst; A—Mariscalco. Records T 17-2-2, A 14-5-1
