Kentucky boys cross country

Brossart wins second straight state title

By Ray Schaefer
Enquirer contributor

LEXINGTON, Ky. — If Bishop Brossart boys cross country coach Ray Kues had any trouble finding his team after Saturday's Class A state race, all he needed to do was look at the awards platform at the Kentucky Horse Park — his Mustangs won their second straight team title, 65-95 over Padu cah St. Mary.

“I'm sure we made a statement,” Kues said. “... We were pleasantly surprised with the whole team. Each of them ran better times than they did (two weeks ago).”

Brossart's latest championship was the school's seventh overall (to go with 1972, '84, '91, '92, '97 and '99 victories). This year's team may have been the most surprising — most of last year's squad graduated, and the Mustangs weren't among the top 10 teams in the state at the beginning of the season.

“That pushed us harder just to succeed,” junior Tim Kaiser said. “We knew we had potential.”

Juniors Paul Markus — who missed last year's race because of an appendectomy — and Kaiser had more than potential. Markus finished third with a 16:36.8, and Kaiser took fifth in 16:49.4.

"I wasn't planning on that,” Markus said.

Kues knew Markus had the talent to do well.

“He ran an excellent race,” Kues said. “One of his goals was to beat the boy from Owsley County (junior Michael Congleton, who was fourth).”

Junior Ian McDole (16th place, 17:08.3), freshman Joey Heil (19th, 17:17.6) and junior Zac Dietrich (35th, 17:56.6) rounded out Brossart's top five.

Kentucky Country Day's Alex Bray (16:24.5) won his third straight title, and Gallatin County's Justin White (16:34.0) was second.

With five juniors leading next year's team, Kaiser felt sure of one thing: Brossart won't be ignored again.

“This year, they weren't expecting us,” Kaiser said. “Next year, they'll expect more.”

St. Henry finished third, Walton-Verona was seventh and Newport Central Catholic was 12th.

Other Northern Kentuckians in the top 20 were: St. Henry senior Jason Burger (10th, 17:01.7); Bellevue senior Matt Mayer (11th, 17:02.20); St. Henry sophomore Chris Danks (12th, 17:03.0); and St. Henry senior Ryan McLane (20th, 17:23.1).

Class AA

Highlands' boys suffered the same fate as the Bluebirds girls: a second place finish to Warren East. The Raiders defended their title 122-169.

Saturday's results left Highlands coach Dan Baker thinking about next year.

“It's a Warren East day,” Baker said. “Everyone comes back next year; three juniors, two freshmen, two eighth-graders. (Warren East) just ran great and took it.”

Wayne County senior Daniel Roberts — his school's only runner — won the race with a time of 16:12.7. Highlands freshman Braylen Derrick (18th place, 17:26.3) turned in the highest finish by a local runner.

Class AAA

South Oldham won the team title over Daviess Coun ty 72-115. Campbell County was seventh with 209 points, Ryle was ninth with 299, Scott was 13th with 350 and Covington Catholic finished 15th with 372.

Campbell County junior Denny Kramer was the lone local runner in the top 20, finishing 16th with a time of 16:30.2.

Kramer collapsed after last week's regional race from what turned out to be hyperventilation. He said a change in strategy on Saturday helped.

“I started out slow the first two miles,” Kramer said. "The last mile, I poured it on.” (5,000 meters)
