Kentucky girls cross country
Northern Ky. teams fall just short

LEXINGTON, Ky. For the second straight year, St.Henry's girls cross country team had to watch another team celebrate a Class A state title.
Frankfort edged the Crusaders 72-77 in Saturday's race at the Kentucky Horse Park. The Panthers won their first state title since 1988.
It's a relief, Frankfort coach Frank Miklavcic said. We've run against St.Henry before. We beat them by two at St.Xavier (in Louisville in September) and beat them by one at the (Kentucky Track and Cross Country Coaches Association) Meet of Champions. We knew it was going to be close.
St.Henry was atop the state rankings for most of the season.
We were hoping for first since we were a point behind (Frankfort) two weeks ago, St.Henry coach Jennifer Klayer said.
St.Henry junior Chrissy Cummings (19:49.3) finished fourth behind Paducah St.Mary's Jackie Wagner (19:16.4), Sarah Cole of Somerset (19:27.9) and Jackie Gordon of Frankfort (19:42.2). Senior Bethanne Murphy was the next Crusader in, at No.13.
Bethanne could have been a little closer to Chrissy, Klayer said.
Frankfort's fourth runner, freshman Ryan Quire, effectively decided the title by finishing 29 seconds ahead of St.Henry junior Julie Armstrong.
St.Henry's fifth runner, senior Stephanie Walterman, finished 33 seconds ahead of Frankfort's Deanne Norton, who was fortunate to even be running - she suffered minor injuries in a car accident Friday.
Walterman couldn't complain about her team finishing second.
We did our best, Walterman said. I don't think anybody can say they could've done any better.
Bishop Brossart finished third with 115 points.
That's what we were shooting for, really coach Dave Schuh said. All five had their fastest times. I was hoping they'd run like that earlier this year, but they finally put it all together.
Eighth-grader Christen Kelly was the fastest Brossart runner; she finished seventh with a time of 20:16.5.
Other Northern Kentucky runners in the top 20 were: Ludlow senior Pam Gerkin (eighth place, 20:17.2); Holy Cross sixth-grader Alexandra Serrano (10th, 20:21.7); Ludlow senior Ashley Pence (17th, 20:51.0); Dayton junior T.T. Rowekamp (18th, 20:55.1); Brossart eighth-grader Erica Johnson (19th, 20:57.7); and St.Henry senior Bridget Messer (20th, 21:02.8).
Class AA
Highlands shared St.Henry's disappointment. The Bluebirds finished second to Warren East, 36-75.
The Bluebirds didn't have much of a chance against Warren East. The Raiders placed five in the top 25, and freshmen Jenny Wimsatt and Heather Coulter finished 1-2.
Senior Jessie Barth led Highlands with a 12th-place finish, and senior Kelly Owens was 18th.
Our girls by far had their best times of the year, Highlands coach Dan Baker said. I'm proud of every one of them.
Lloyd junior Britt Rodgers took 13th place. Highlands freshmen Ashley Jones and Allison Burke and senior Andrea Reitano took 23rd, 24th and 25th.
Class AAA
Pulaski County defeated Daviess County, 67-159, for the team title, and Lexington Paul Dunbar junior Suzanne Cooney won the race.
Scott finished third with 179 points, Campbell County was fifth with 209, and Notre Dame was 19th with 436. Notre Dame junior Meghan Crowe was the fastest local runner, taking 11th in 19:17.8.
