Blanchester 8, Badin 3

Lansing's 60-yard run wins it

BLANCHESTER — The play is called Right, Bear Load Right. Blanchester used it sparingly, but just enough.

Wildcats senior quarterback Jeremy Lansing ran it three times on a five-play possession in the second quarter. On the third try, Lansing ran 60 yards for the only touchdown of the game as Blanchester edged Badin 8-3 in a Division IV regional quarterfinal Friday at Blanchester.

"I've been dreaming of this moment since I was 6 years old playing pee-wee football," Lansing said of leading Blanchester to a win in the school's first-ever playoff appearance.

The 10-1 Wildcats earned a berth in next Friday's regional semifinals against Wyoming, a 23-20 (OT) winner over Indian Hill.

"That's as tough a team as we've played this year," said Badin coach Terry Malone whose team finishes the season 5-6.

The Rams were hobbled by the absence of their leading rusher, junior Andrew Thieken, who fractured a rib and punctured a lung in last week's win over Hamilton.

Badin's scoring Friday was limited to senior Tom Puma's 27-yard field goal on Badin's first possession of the game. They went 1-for-6 on fourth-down conversions.

"Their kids are very quick," Malone said. "When we looked at the tapes, we felt like they had a quick defense."

Blanchester capitalized on one of Badin's fourth-down failures. Lansing gained 77 yards while keeping the ball four times on the five-play drive, capping the possession with a 60-yard run with 5:47 left in the half.

"We get a lot of first downs on that play," said Lansing, who finished the first half with 100 yards on 12 carries. "I get most of my touchdowns on that play."

"It took us a little while to adjust," Malone said. "They ran so many different things that our kids had a hard time keeping track."

The Blanchester defense, which posted seven shutouts during the regular season, limited Badin to 37 yards rushing in the first half, forcing the Rams to go to the air. Puma, who completed three passes for 28 yards in the regular-season finale, hit 6-of-9 for 61 yards in the first half. But the only scoring the Rams could muster was a field goal.
