Newport incumbents romp
By Terry Flynn
The Cincinnati Enquirer
NEWPORT - Newport's voters made it clear they were satisfied with the progress made by their incumbent city commissioners, returning all four to office for another two-year term Tuesday night.
It's pretty clear that this board had made an impact on the community, said Mayor Tom Guidugli, who was unopposed in returning for another four-year term. This vote tells us we are continuing to move in the right direction.
This commission has been involved in much of the city's progress, including the Newport Aquarium, Newport on the Levee, the new city gov ernment building, the World Peace Bell and a number of residential and office projects.
This is an affirmation for the direction we're taking, said Commissioner Beth Fennell. We've taken so many huge jumps, like the riverfront development and the ($28 million) Hope VI grant. These are things that will continue to affect the city for years to come.
Jerry Peluso once again led the balloting, with 2,505, followed by Ms. Fennell with 2,142, Jan Knepshield with 1,989 and Ken Rechtin with 1,985.
The vote count does not include the breakdown of the absentee ballots.
A lot of positive things have happened in the past eight years, Mr. Peluso, a lifelong Newport resident, said. I think people are happy with the city's direction. And I think residents like the fact that their elected officials are accessible.
Around Campbell County, incumbents finished on top in virtually every race. The county lacked any burning issues this year in any of its cities.
In Bellevue, Steve Guidugli, who ran unsuccessfully for mayor two years ago, joined five incumbents on that city's council, beating out Carole Kappes Amend, 1,130 to 1,045 votes for the sixth and final council seat.
