By James Pilcher
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Incumbent Republicans won all three elections for area Ohio Senate seats Tuesday.
In western Hamilton County's 8th District, Sen. Louis W. Blessing, R-Colerain Township, led 63.5 percent to 30.6 percent over Democrat Stuart Manning, with 99 percent of 1,025 precincts reporting.
Mr. Manning did not participate in joint appearances and did not reply to requests for interviews during the campaign.
Sen. Doug White, R-Manchester, won his second term, according to the Associated Press, facing no Democratic opponent in the 14th Dis trict, which covers Clermont, Brown, Clinton, Fayette, Highland, Adams and Pike counties.
Mr. White, an owner-operator of an 800-acre farm, served in the Ohio House for five years before winning his Senate seat in 1996. He said his primary concerns for the upcoming term are:
Education.
Economic development for his district.
Removing unnecessary regulations from agricultural businesses.
In the 4th District, which covers Butler and Preble counties, Sen. Scott Nein, R-Middletown, led Democrat Arnold D. Engel 77.9 percent to 22 percent, with 129 of 191 precincts reporting.
Mr. Nein ran for his second full term, while Mr. Engel also unsuccessfully ran for the Fairfield Board of Education last year.
Mr. Nein, who has been senator since 1995 and was a state representative from 1991 to 1995, terms himself a fiscal conservative.
Mr. Blessing was a state representative from 1983 to 1986 and has been a state senator since 1997. He serves as chairman of the Judiciary Committee and Ways and Means Committee.
State senators earn $42,427 annually. Legislators will be sworn in next January.
Heading into the election, Republicans held a 21-12 advantage in the state Senate.
