Incumbents win 23 of 34 school board seats

Election Day brought few changes to the leadership of Northern Kentucky schools.
Of 34 open seats on school boards in Boone, Kenton and Campbell counties, 23 were filled Tuesday by incumbents 19 faced no competition in keeping their spots.
Only one-third of those open seats were contested, with candidates vying for spots in Boone County's District 2, Campbell County's District 2, as well as Covington, Dayton, Fort Thomas and Walton-Verona.
Seven candidates fought for three seats on the Covington school board. Incumbent Col Owens and newcomers Rita Wilson and Glenda Huff defeated incum bent Hensley Jemmott and Everett Dameron, Charles Butch Reed, and Joe Boyle.
Four newcomers battled for two seats on the Fort Thomas Independent board. Nancy Johnson Baker and Jeffrey Beach came out on top with 3,832 and 3,537 votes, respectively, defeating Eric Steinman, who got 3,209 votes, and Simon Sapsford who got 1,366 votes, with all 14 precincts reporting.
Results do not include absentee ballots.
Steve Morris defeated Kimberly Fender in Campbell County Schools' District 2 race. With all six precincts reporting, Mr. Morris got 1,704 votes over Ms. Fender's 1,282 votes.
Incumbents Debbie Wiseman Becker and Michael Carr kept their seats on the Dayton Inde pendent board, beating challenger Karen Allen. Ms. Becker won 847 votes, followed by Mr. Carr with 766 votes and Ms. Allen with 560 votes, with all three precincts reporting.
In Boone County Schools' District 2, newcomer Stephen Kinman narrowly defeated incumbent David Conrad with 51.7 percent of the vote. With all nine precincts reporting, Mr. Kinman captured 2,058 votes while Mr. Conrad got 1,807 votes.
And in Walton-Verona Independent Schools, the two open seats were filled by incumbent William Wethington, 848 votes, and newcomer Kelly Fulmer, 800 votes, who defeated Jess Mindel, 584 votes, all three precincts reporting.
Winners will take office in January to serve four-year terms.
