Kenner completes GOP hold on commission

BURLINGTON Boone Fiscal Court is once again an all-Republican group.
The newest Republican is Charlie Kenner of Union, who soundly defeated Richwood Democrat Lance Lucas, 60 percent to 40 percent in the District 2 commission race.
The prize: Mr. Kenner, the son of a former Boone County Sheriff, the late Ron Kenner, will serve the final two years of former commissioner Rob Arnold's term. Mr. Arnold moved to Virginia earlier this year, and Mr. Lucas was appointed in April.
Mr. Kenner said the reason for his victory can be summed up in two words: better organization.
(It was) a lot of people helping, Mr. Kenner said. Forty-six of the 52 precincts I've walked personally.
And the walking paid off - it was Mr. Kenner's night from the beginning.
Absentee ballots alone put him ahead of Mr. Lucas, the son of U.S. Rep. Ken Lucas, by nearly 500 votes, and the lead grew to just over 2,800 with 28 precincts counted.
Republican commissioners Cathy Flaig and Robert Hay thought the victory margin would be large.
Charlie's a great man, Ms. Flaig said. I'm looking forward to (working) with him. I wish Lance all the luck in the world. He did a good job for the time he was here.
Boone County Republican Party Chairman Ed Moore wasn't surprised, either.
Boone County is a Republican County, Mr. Moore said.
Mr. Lucas said George W. Bush carrying Boone County by a more than 2 to 1 ratio hurt him. I just think people went in there and voted Republican, Mr. Lucas said I don't think people considered my race. I didn't go in there with blinders on. I put in a lot of effort; that's the disheartening thing.
Two issues loom for Mr. Kenner and the rest: how to manage growth; and whether to merge the Boone County Sheriff's and Boone County Police departments.
