Portman wins easy re-election

By Howard Wilkinson
The Cincinnati Enquirer

U.S. Rep. Rob Portman won an easy re-election victory. The Republican from Terrace Park had 74 percent of the vote to 23 percent for the Democrat, Waynesville Mayor Charles Sanders. Libertarian Robert Bidwell had 3 percent.

Mr. Portman wasn't around to savor the expected win. A top adviser to George W. Bush's presidential campaign, Mr. Portman took off for Bush headquarters in Austin, Texas, to await results of the presidential contest.

But while he was away, voters in his district — which includes parts of Cincinnati, eastern and northeastern Hamilton County, and part of Warren County, Clermont, Brown and Adams counties — were heading to the polls to give Mr. Portman a resounding fifth term.

Mr. Portman played a highly visible role in the Bush-Cheney campaign.

This was Mr. Sanders' second try at taking down Mr. Portman in the heavily Republican district. Voters in Waynesville were voting on whether to remove him from office.
