Strickland trounces GOP challenger
By Cindi Andrews
The Cincinnati Enquirer
U.S. Rep. Ted Strickland, D-Lucasville, won re-election in the 6th District Tuesday with 58 percent of the vote to 40 percent for Republican challenger Mike Azinger of Marietta.
Libertarian Kenneth R. MacCutcheon of Lebanon trailed with 2 percent of the vote.
I think my constituents know me and they know I'm not an extreme liberal and I'm not an extreme conservative, Mr. Strickland said. ... I think that's the representation that the district needs.
The GOP this year fielded a lesser-known candidate after Mr. Strickland handily fended off then-Lt. Gov. Nancy Hollister in 1998.
Before that, the district had regularly switched hands. Mr. Strickland was first elected in 1992, ousted in 1994 and re-elected in 1996.
Mr. Strickland campaigned on using the federal budget surplus to shore up Social Security and Medicare. He also advocated a prescription benefits plan for senior citizens.
The district covers 13 counties from Warren east to the West Virginia line.
