Walker elected to Clermont Co. commission
By Tom O'Neill
The Cincinnati Enquirer
BATAVIA For the first time in nearly a decade, there will be a new face among the Clermont County commissioners.
With all of the county's 191 precincts reporting, Mary Walker, 54, a Union Township trustee, defeated Democratic businessman Dave Lane, 43,289 votes (67 percent) to 21,300 (33 percent).
Both would have been first-termers. Ms. Walker defeated two-time incumbent Richard Martin in March in the GOP primary, with 55 percent of the vote.
The commission will remain all-Republican. Robert Proud, seeking his fourth term, won easily over Democrat Gregg Conrad of Amelia, 44,576 votes (69 percent) to 20,318 (31 percent.
You got to stick with Proud, Elizabeth Jones of Batavia, who turned 18 in September, said as she left the polls at Batavia Elementary School. He's done a good job.
Mrs. Walker's campaign focused on managing resi dential and commercial growth throughout the county, and said her years on the zoning board in fast-growing Union Township would serve her well in balancing the competing interests of developers and residents.
Ms. Walker, a trustee for seven years, previously served eight years on Union Township's zoning commission.
Mr. Lane, 47, of Miami Township is president of Lane and Co. Communications.
Ms. Walker's campaign slogan, For all the people all the time, resonated with county voters who embraced her idea to move commissioners' meetings to evenings periodically, perhaps once a month, to foster more public input. Mr. Proud also supports the move.
Weekly meetings are held on Wednesday mornings.
I think that would be great, said Linda Foster, 39, of Batavia, another Batavia Elementary site voter.
