Waynesville mayor recalled
Effort to oust Sanders successful
By Randy McNutt
The Cincinnati Enquirer
WAYNESVILLE Mayor Charles Sanders was recalled from office Tuesday.
Unofficial results show the recall passed by a vote of 691 to 473.
Councilwoman Sandy Stemple will become the mayor until the next mayoral election.
Impetus for the recall was the mayor's charge that the village police department practiced racial profiling.
It caused a furor in the village of about 1,900 people.
On Feb. 26, two village police officers stopped three black men for alleged traffic violations. The men claimed they were held at gunpoint and handcuffed while officers searched for drugs. The men were not charged.
Mr. Sanders, one of Waynesville's three adult black residents, accused Chief Allen Carter of condoning racial profiling.
In May, a Warren County sheriff's investigation cleared the two officers of engaging in profiling.
Mr. Sanders has held public office for about nine years in this northern Warren County town.
Since the turmoil started, he has continued to reject calls for his resignation. Elections officials said 209 registered voters more than the required 25 percent who voted in the last election signed recall petitions. Among them: council members Ernest Lawson, Phil Day and Ms. Stemple, who lost a race against Mr. Sanders last fall.
Mr. Sanders also lost his bid for the 2nd Congressional seat against Republican incumbent Rob Portman.
