Pig Parade / When Irish Styes Are Smiling
With a little luck, pig project went swimmingly
By Owen Findsen
The Cincinnati Enquirer
This is 194th in a series spotlighting pigs from the Big Pig Gig Public Art Project taking place in Cincinnati, Covington and Newport. Find past pig profiles at cincinnati.com.
It was a competition between swimming and pig painting this summer for Ryan Lindsay, who fit his pig work in between swim meets.
Ryan, 14, of Mount Lookout and a freshman at St. Xavier High School, was assisted by Cathy Wash, 19, of ArtWorks.
Sponsor: Patrick Lindsay and Dan McKenna.
This pig's pen: Was Lytle Park. The sponsors are keeping the pig, so it might show up in the St. Patrick's Day Parade and events sponsored by the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick.
You were inspired by: I did some art for the Celtic Festival. Mr. McKenna is a festival sponsor, and he asked me if I would like to do a pig. My father sponsored it with him. They went to ArtWorks and ArtWorks said I was too young to do a pig on my own and assigned Cathy Wash to work with me.
What's the pig idea? It's designed like a leprechaun with a bright red beard, a green hat, buckled shoes, a long green coat with tails. On the back of the coat there is a shamrock and inside the shamrock there is a landscape of Ireland.
Completing the project took: It took a month and a half, only a few hours at a time, because of all the swim meets and everything else. I swim and play baseball. The pig fell right into the swimming championships, when we (Cincinnati Aquatic Club) were representing Ohio at the big championship meet in Minnesota.
What's the matter? Latex paint.
Your high on the hog was: I learned a lot of new techniques in painting. I do a lot of drawing, but I don't get to paint much.
Pig peeve: We had the Glass Hand do the hat and beard for us, but they were done on a different pig mold, so they didn't fit. We had to do a lot of sanding to make them fit our pig.
Best pig tale: We didn't even have a name for this pig. When we took the designs to Kinko's to have them copied, the man at the counter said, Hey, when Irish styes are smiling, so we picked that. We wanted to give the guy credit but he wouldn't take it.
My favorite pork dish: Pork tenderloin, followed by hot dogs.
What artistic movement most affected the outcome of this pig? I looked on the Internet for different leprechauns and Irish landscapes.
If your pig starred in a movie, who would you cast to play the role? Sean Connery.
