Pigs on the Block

$5,000 high bid so far in auction of Big Pig Gig art

By Owen Findsen
The Cincinnati Enquirer

With a bid of $5,000, “Porker's Wild” leads the pack in the eBay online auction for the Big Pig Gig. “Elvis Pigsley” is close behind with a $4,025 bid.

Pig fans are going on the Internet to track bids on 166 pigs being sold online. The pigs are in four groups, with the auction of Group One closing last night. “Porker's Wild” is in Group Two, closing tonight, and “Elvis Pigsley'' is one of the final online pigs to be sold Saturday.

Four bidders were chasing wildlife artist John Ruthven's “All A-BOAR-d” pig, with bids that reached $3,550 Wednesday with three hours to go. Eight bidders vied for “Dare to Dream,” which was at $3,050. Only four of the 39 pigs in group one failed to attract bidders, but 12 pigs were being bid below the reserve price.

The first group will bring at least $35,000 for ArtWorks and other local charities.

“Dare to Dream” was created by artist Chris Bailey for the Communicating Arts Credit Union. The sale will benefit the scholarship fund of the Ohio Credit Union League. “All A-BOAR-d” was sponsored by the Cincinnati Museum Center.

In addition, 65 pigs will be sold at a live auction Monday at Music Hall.
