Rotarians honor police

Five Cincinnati police officers have been honored by the Rotary Club of Cincinnati.
Police officer Kathleen Newsom received the club's Valor/Hero Award.
Police Officer Philip Stoup received the Superior Achievement Award.
Police Officer Scott Krauser received the Career Enhancement Award.
Sgts. Donnan Murnan and Christopher Matzen received the Administration Award.
The awards were presented during a ceremony Thursday at the Omni Netherland Hall of Mirrors.
The Rotary Club said Officer Newsom, assigned to District 1, displayed quick thinking, bravery and the will to overcome a vicious attack. While on patrol on the downtown skywalk on March 13, a suspect struck her and tried to take her handgun. She resisted, and though injured and dazed was able to broadcast his description, which led to the suspect's apprehension.
Officer Stroup, assigned to the Gang Unit, was recognized for his integrity, exceptional work ethic and invincible determination as a member of both the police division's Gang Unit and SWAT team.
Officer Krauser, assigned to District 1, was honored for his high degree of professionalism. He truly exemplifies the time-honored tradition of "street policing,' the Rotary Club said. He avails himself of all training and imparts his knowledge to his fellow officers, and is recognized as a resource for technical expertise on video cameras, night vision, video computer sketching and other equipment.
Sgts. Murnan and Matzen handled the task of reconstructing the events of Dec. 5, 1997, when Officers Dan Pope and Ron Jeter were killed. The task required putting aside personal feeling of loss and grief and objectively looking at circumstances, activities and events of that tragic evening to learn what went wrong and to support recommendations to prevent a recurrence, the Rotary Club said.
Sgts. Murnan and Matzen are assigned to the Inspections Section.
