Bad first half costs Badin soccer title

COLUMBUS — Before Saturday, the Badin girls soccer team made three trips to the Division II state championship game and lost two of them by one goal.

Saturday, at Columbus Crew Stadium, undefeated Cuyahoga Falls Walsh Jesuit wasted no time settling the outcome. The Warriors, who were making their first title appearance, scored two goals 26 seconds apart less than four minutes into the game on the way to a 4-1 win over Badin.

“I think, in the first half, we were back on our heels a little bit,” Badin coach Katy Brennan said. “I think we were caught off-guard by their speed and the talent they had. We were a little frustrated, but we still played hard.”

Senior Ann Menke scored the Rams' first-ever state-championship goal on a deflection off Walsh Jesuit midfielder Kelci Lanich from 7 yards out with 4:58 left in the game.

“We had nothing to lose,” Menke said. “We just wanted to go out and play our hearts out.”

Walsh Jesuit (21-0-1) is the fifth Ohio girls team to finish a season undefeated. Badin finishes 12-6-4.

Walsh Jesuit got goals from Katie Schwager with 36:49 left in the first half and Kristen Weiss 26 seconds later to grab a quick 2-0 lead. The shots on goal were the Warriors' first two of the game.

“That was tough,” Menke said of the Warriors' early lead. “We were a little frustrated by that.”

“Weiss has a tremendous amount of speed,” Brennan said. “That caught us off guard. She's very talented.”

Schwager gave the Warriors a 3-0 lead by stripping Badin's Megan Filipek of the ball and hitting a shot from 30 yards past Rams goalkeeper Steph Streit.

Walsh Jesuit fired 10 shots on goal in the first half. The Warriors finished with 12 on goal, while Badin was able to muster four on goal.

        Goals: W—Schwager 2, Weiss, Hoban; B— Menke. Records: B 12-6-4, W 21-0-1.
