Reading 50, Milford Center Fairbanks 8

Wynn scores four TDs in Reading's 50-8 win

By Dave Schutte
The Cincinnati Enquirer

HUBER HEIGHTS — Reading tailback DeShawn Wynn is a one-man wrecking crew. He scored four touchdowns and rushed for 312 yards on 25 carries Saturday as the Blue Devils rolled to a 50-8 victory over Milford Center Fairbanks at Heidkamp Stadium.

Reading (10-2) advances to the Division V regional championship game Saturday against Brookville (11-1) at a site to be announced today by the Ohio High School Athletic Association.

“Coach asked me to rush for over 300 yards or score five touchdowns” said Wynn, who has met his coach's ever-changing goal in each of the last eight games. “I'm not sure what he will ask me to do next week, but I've never failed, and I'll go after it.”

In eight games this season, Wynn has scored 24 touchdowns and rushed for 1,678 yards on 180 carries (9.3 average).

Reading quarterback Zach Maxfield also turned in an outstanding performance, completing 8-of-13 passes for 178 yards and two touchdowns.

“They thought if they could keep our offense off the field, they could beat us,” Maxfield said.

Fairbanks coach Dave Gebhart was worried about the Reading offense. He was right. Reading racked up 509 total yards (327 rushing and 182 passing) and scored 15 points before the Panthers ran an offensive play.

The Blue Devils scored on their first possession, driving 65 yards in eight plays with Maxfield throwing a nine-yard TD pass to wide receiver Charlie Vample.

Fairbanks fumbled the kickoff return with Tim Caldwell recovering at the Panthers 28. Six plays later, Wynn scored on a two-yard run and Reading was in command 15-0.

On Reading's fourth possession, the Blue Devils struck quickly. On the first play, Maxfield threw a short pass to Vample, who weaved his way to a 71-yard touchdown and a 22-0 lead.

Wynn scored on runs of 71 and 19 yards in the second quarter and Reading had a 35-0 halftime lead.

“The University of Pittsburgh has already offered DeShawn a full ride,” Reading coach Ken Minor said. “He must be pretty good. I asked him for seven TDs in the first game he played and he came through for us.”

This is Reading's third appearance in the postseason. They previously qualified in 1972 and '73 but lost in the first round.
