Cabaret theater coming to Newport complex
By Terry Flynn
The Cincinnati Enquirer
NEWPORT Shadowbox Cabaret, a three-stage theater that combines comedy, music and one-act plays, has signed as a principal tenant of the under-construction Newport on the Levee.
An offspring of the original Shadowbox at the Easton Mall in Columbus, the Newport theater will be a nonprofit operation to serve as a training ground of actors and comedians and an educational venue for local theater-
goers to experience one-act contemporary plays.
Shadowbox will occupy 6,000 square feet and feature three stages, with seating for 250 people on the main floor and in the balcony. It will include a snack kitchen and full bar.
Katy Psenicka, Shadowbox public relations director, said Friday the center stage usually features comedy acts or monologues, while the stage to the left features rock 'n' roll bands and the stage to the right features theater performances.
Shadowbox performers, who also serve as administrators to run the operation, are required to attend theater classes during the day and participate in a Shadowbox training program.
Ms. Psenicka said the Shadowbox facility is designed to look and feel like a basement theater that guests might find in New York, with a warehouse atmosphere, concrete floors, exposed conduits and block walls.
The original Columbus Shadowbox, a for-profit venture, charges $20 for adults and $10 for students and seniors. However, no prices have been set yet for the nonprofit Newport theater.
Newport on the Levee, which includes the Newport Aquarium as an anchor, is scheduled to open in the fall of 2001 with a 3-D IMAX theater, a 20-screen multiplex theater, and some 50 shops and restaurants, with garage parking for 2,000 vehicles.
Developed by Steiner and Associates of Columbus, the developer of Easton Mall, Newport on the Levee is expected to feature a Sega Gameworks featuring all manner of electronic games, as well as restaurant and bar. A Gameworks was one of the original tenants at Easton.
Other tenants already mentioned by Steiner as in line for the Levee are a pair of restaurants - a seafood restaurant and a diner - and a comedy club.
