Covington man indicted in death of neighbor
By James Hannah
The Cincinnati Enquirer
COVINGTON A Kenton County grand jury on Friday indicted Bill Chambers of Covington on murder charges.
Police said Mr. Chambers, 24, apparently had a fight with 47-year-old Barry Bailey, who lived in the same apartment house at 801 Perry St., in the early hours of Sept. 17. Mr. Bailey was beaten severely with a base ball bat, and his body was discovered in the basement of the building.
Mr. Bailey's family said he was an alcoholic who spent years wandering across the country, only recently leaving homeless shelters and soup kitchens for an apartment. Mr. Bailey, a West Virginia native, had lived in the Perry Street apartment on the fringes of the MainStrasse area for about three months.
Covington Police said Mr. Chambers was drinking vodka when he knocked on Mr. Bailey's door to ask for cigarettes. When Mr. Bailey couldn't supply any, Mr. Chambers became upset and a fight broke out.
Mr. Chambers, who has pleaded not guilty to the murder charge, is being held on no bond at the Kenton County jail.
