Fire destroys Covington home

By Joe Wessels
The Cincinnati Enquirer

COVINGTON — Fire destroyed a house on Highway Avenue along the Ohio River Sunday, leaving its owner homeless.

Flames shot from the roof and heavy smoke blew across the river into downtown Cincinnati during the afternoon blaze. Covington Fire Chief Joe Heringhaus said a wood-burning stove door was left open in the basement, sparking the fire.

Homeowner Tony Jarosz attempted to extinguish the fire before calling for help at about 2:30 p.m.

“Things got worse before they got better,” Chief Heringhaus said of Mr. Jarosz's unsuccessful efforts.

The smoke and heat forced firefighters into a defensive mode, the chief said.

Mr. Jarosz, 48, escaped unhurt, as did his dog. Only minor injuries to firefighters were reported.

Mr. Jarosz, a computerized automated mailing machine serviceman, began remodeling the house in 1976.

“It was everything to me,” he said standing on the street, his house still smoldering. “I'd made it through 'Nam and I'll make it through this.”

Chief Heringhaus said the house was a total loss, estimating damages between $150,000 and $175,000. Mr. Jarosz said the house was not insured, and he estimated his loss of the home, and personal effects at more than $300,000.

“All I'm worried about is getting my (car) keys so I can get to work tomorrow,” said Mr. Jarosz, whose two brothers will assist him with living arrangements. “I'm going to start over.”
