Children, teachers say thanks together

Harvest soup shared outdoors

MASON — The wind was chilly, but stomachs were warm at Mason Middle School on Tuesday as about 250 students celebrated a pre-Thanksgiving meal with their teachers.

In low temperatures, the children trekked outside midday for a share of harvest soup, which had been cooking over a fire in a big pot since before 8 a.m., said science teacher Rod King.

“This was a little celebration for them,” Mr. King said. “It was a "thank you' from us to them for a good first semester.”

        The youngsters were thankful, too.

First, they liked the warm soup and sides of green beans, potatoes, carrots, corn and warm bread.

The feast was capped off with brownies, cookies, cakes, and peanut butter dipped in chocolate.

Some also said they liked the casual atmosphere of the day.

And there were other things to be thankful for, too.

Erin Pennington, 12, said she and her friends sat around a table in the nippy air and said they are thankful to be alive.

Others gave thanks for good company.

“It was nice,” said 13-year-old Jenna Snodgrass. “Everybody got to be with their friends.”
