COVINGTON Sales of Powerball tickets are surging in Kentucky.
Tickets for the multistate lottery the jackpot for today's drawing is estimated to be worth $92 million have sold heavily in the Bluegrass state, said Kentucky Lottery officials in Louisville. The heavy demand could drive the pot higher than the estimate.
Sales of Powerball tickets in Kentucky last week were more than double of what they averaged per week last year, said Kentucky Lottery spokeswoman Heather Schutte. Last week, $3.75 million worth of tickets were sold, compared with last year's weekly sales aver age of $1.8 million.
Ms. Schutte said the increase in sales is attributed, in part, to the fact that Kentucky has had three Powerball jackpot winners since April including local winner Independence resident Mack Wayne Metcalf.
For $1 you get a chance at $92 million. You can't beat that deal, Karen Walker, 44, of East Walnut Hills said while waiting in line at a Covington gas station to buy her $1 Powerball ticket.
Paid out over 25 years, the $92 million jackpot is worth $3,680,000 per year. That's about $306,666 per month, $70,769 per week, $10,110 per day. The jackpot's cash option, paid all at once, is $49.5 million. After taxes, the cash option payout is $33,660,000.
