Vandals strike again at Edgewood schools
Kumler field house project facing delay

TRENTON For the second time in six months, vandals have damaged a construction site of the Edgewood school district.
Sometime between 2:30 p.m. Saturday and 7 a.m. Monday, copper tubing and plastic pipes in a field house under construction at Edgewood High School's football stadium were damaged. Edgewood construction manager Mike McCoppin estimated the damage at $15,000 to $20,000.
It's a lot of senseless damage, Mr. McCoppin said.
It was really a setback for us.
The Edgewood Boosters, Quarterback Club and other community members are paying for the 10,000-square-foot field house at the south end of Kumler Field between the baseball diamonds and stadium.
The plumbing was to be done by Dec. 10 when the committee had arranged for donated cranes and lifts to be brought to the site for further work.
The vandalism, Mr. McCoppin said, set the project behind by three weeks, and he's not sure all the equipment and helpers can be rescheduled. He's hoping the facility can be under roof by Jan. 1.
School officials said they found about a dozen beer cans and bottles at the site.
They said they were surprised because the damage was done in a well-lighted area.
Officers from the Butler County Sheriff's Office are investigating, but no charges had been filed by late Tuesday.
In June, damage exceeded $50,000 when about a dozen new windows at Babeck Elementary School were smashed, fire extinguishers discharged and school equipment damaged.
In September, three boys two 11-year-olds and one 12
year-old admitted their involvement.
They received probation.
Edgewood Treasurer Ryan Slone said the weekend damage should be covered by the district's insurance policy.
