TMC women eye NCAA

Time to take program to next level

By Dave Goldstein
The Cincinnati Enquirer

The Thomas More women's basketball team has had four straight winning seasons. But this season's club wants more than that, including a berth in the NCAA Tournament.

Despite losing Holly Roberts (Gallatin County) and Jodi Schroeder (Seton) to injury, the Saints return most of the talent that led TMC to a 14-12 record last season. The Saints started four sophomores and a freshman for most of last season, so this squad will be older and expects to be better.

“They've worked their tails off, and now they want the payoff,” coach Sharri Brumfield said. “They want to go to the tournament. They want to win 20 games. They want to go undefeated at home. We have high goals for this group and we think we can achieve all of them.”

TMC beat Maryville 56-49 and played No.16 Sewanee tough before falling 93-83 last weekend. The Saints were led by post player Bridget New (McAuley), who scored 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds against Maryville and followed with a 16-point, 12-rebound, five-steal performance against Sewanee. She led the team with 13.6 points a game last season.

New is joined by last year's starting point guard, Shawna Kelley (Glen Este); shooting guard Ashley Will (Mariemont); forward Donna Baker (Campbell County) and forward Bethany Vice (Boone County).

Brumfield said her team's heart, shown in the loss to Sewanee, will lead TMC to great success this season. “Sewanee will be dancing in March, and I just hope we'll be there with them.”
