Wider lead prevents recount
Democrat Coates ahead for House
By Howard Wilkinson
The Cincinnati Enquirer
There will be no automatic recount of votes in the close 32nd Ohio House District contest, after Democrat Wayne Coates gained votes in this week's official count.
Mr. Coates, the former mayor of Forest Park, led Springdale Republican Jim Raussen by a scant 169 votes in the initial election night count.
But when the official count was done Tuesday, including questioned Election Day votes and absentee ballots that hadn't previously been counted, Mr. Coates' lead expanded to 536 votes putting his lead outside the 0.5 percent margin that automatically triggers a recount under Ohio law.
The Hamilton County Board of Elections certified the official count Wednesday.
Mr. Raussen could still have the votes recounted in the 32nd Ohio House District, which includes Forest Park, Springdale, Sharonville and Blue Ash.
But, because Mr. Coates' margin is above 0.5 percent, Mr. Raussen would have to pay $10 for each of the 32nd District's 136 precincts.
Mr. Raussen could not be reached for comment Wednesday.
The victory by Mr. Coates means that the Ohio House district that was held for more than 20 years by Republican Dale Van Vyven, who could not run again under Ohio's term limits law, will go into the Democratic column.
