UNION A Ryle High School star athlete was killed and another teen was seriously injured in a one-vehicle accident early Thursday.
Travis Alig, 18, of Union was pinned underneath the vehicle and died of internal injuries at the scene, said Boone County Coroner Doug Stith. The accident occurred at about 3:15 a.m. on Frogtown Road in Union.
Mr. Alig was a passenger in a vehicle driven by Ben Wrobleski, 17, of Dayton, Ky. Ben was treated at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence, and released.
Another passenger, Travis Grant, 17, was in serious condition Thursday at University Hospital.
Alcohol was not a factor in the crash, and preliminary findings show excessive speed was not the cause, said Boone County Police Lt. Tom Webster.
Our best guess right now is inexperience, he said.
The truck went off the right side of the road, the driver overcorrected and the vehicle flipped, Lt. Webster said.
The passengers, who were not wearing seat belts, were thrown from the vehicle. The driver was wearing a seat belt.
Travis Alig was a quarterback for the Ryle High team and last week was voted most athletic at the school.
He also played shortstop for Ryle's baseball team.
