LIBERTY TOWNSHIP Bicyclists will have more paths to pedal in this Butler County community thanks to a $217,600 state grant for a new bikeway.
The grant, one of 57 recently awarded statewide by the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) for bikeway and hiking trails, will be used to complete the fourth of a seven-phase bikeway construction project in Liberty Township.
It's a great thing for residents, said Township Administrator Nell Kilpatrick. Some day they will be able to bike across Liberty Township along a network of bike and hike pathways.
The grant will build a 10-foot-wide, 0.6-mile bikeway beginning at LeSourdsville-West Chester Road, near the township's new $1.8 million, 42-acre wetland park's bike path off the Michael A. Fox Highway. The bikeway will end at Maud Hughes Road.
The grant was one of only two awarded by ODOT to Greater Cincinnati communities; the other went to the city of Mason in Warren County.
Mason also will receive $326,586 for a 2.6-mile bike path along Mason-Montgomery Road between Socialville Foster Road and Main Street, which will improve access to schools in the area.
ODOT Director Gordon Proctor said the area grants were part of the more than $15 million allocated, with grants ranging from $15,000 to $1.5 million.
Ms. Kilpatrick said future links of the predominantly east-west bike trail will extend from Maud Hughes to Yankee Road and later to Cincinnati Dayton Road, Lakota East High School, and eventually end at Liberty Township's eastern border at Butler Warren County Line Road.
