Networks put pinch on animated Grinch

map
You're a mean one, Mr. Grinch!

The year we want to compare your 1966 classic cartoon version of Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas with the new Jim Carrey film, we can hardly find it on TV.

The Grinch cartoon, narrated by Boris Karloff, usually airs about 10 times each year on Time Warner's WTBS and TNT, among the nation's biggest cable channels.

But this season, the delightful family cartoon has been relegated to Time Warner's Cartoon Network, which reaches 18 percent fewer homes (60 million) than WTBS (78 million).

map
And The Grinch only will air twice before Christmas:

        • 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 4

        • 8 p.m. Christmas Eve

However, the greedy grinches at Time Warner aired the cartoon four consecutive nights two weeks ago (Nov. 13-16) to cash in on advertising for The Grinch movie, which opened Nov. 17 (with a whopping $55 million box office).

If you don't get the Cartoon Network, the greedy grinches at Time Warner also will sell you a DVD of the 1966 cartoon for $19.98. The combination Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas/Horton Hears a Who from Warner Family Entertainment was ranked No. 10 in national DVD sales last week.

Here's a complete listing of your favorite holiday shows — Charlie Brown, Rudolph, Frosty, Garfield and a dozen variations of A Christmas Carol. The networks' holiday TV program schedule might change, so consult daily TV listings.
