Princeton 64, Moeller 61

By Carey Hoffman
Enquirer contributor

In the brief history of Xavier's Cintas Center, there is no doubt who has made the most dramatic shot.

The honor goes to Princeton's Dalyn Brown. His on-the-run, 30-foot prayer banked in at the buzzer Friday night, giving underdog Princeton a 64-61 victory over Moeller in the second game of the i-wireless Invitational Hoops Classic before a crowd of 3,582.

Moeller entered the season ranked No.2 in the Enquirer's Division I coaches poll; Princeton came in ranked No.10.

Moeller had a chance to win with the score tied 61-61. The Crusaders set up their final possession with 13.1 seconds remaining.

They tried to find star forward Matt Sylvester flashing through the paint, but Princeton's defense collapsed and guard Chris McGrath came away with the loose ball. He kicked it out to Brown with less than five seconds left.

“I was thinking there were two seconds left, just run it down, run my guy to the basket and throw up a prayer,” Brown said of the prelude to his shot. unning full-speed, he let go of the ball, which hit inside the square above the basket and rattled through the rim.

“Our kids have been working hard,” Princeton coach Paul Andrews said. “(But) you know a shot like that is luck. We got lucky.”

Princeton gave itself a chance to win by finding ways to survive against Moeller's taller front line in the paint, and by being opportunistic. The Vikings had 11 steals, including five from Brown. Brown also finished as Princeton's leading scorer with 13 points.

Moeller seemed ready to take control a few times, but Princeton used an 8-0 run in the middle of the third quarter to stay in the game.

Moeller got a scare when Sylvester was undercut going up for alley-oop dunk and crashed hard to the floor.

Sylvester made his way back to his feet and continued an outstanding night. The 6-foot-7 Ohio State signee scored 25 points and 11 rebounds.

Moeller was handicapped by 19 turnovers.

“I thought we played poorly all game,” Crusaders coach Carl Kremer said. “We turned the ball over a lot. I thought we played nervous.”
