Hauer only inductee in 2000 SOPGA Hall
By Jack Murray
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Bob Hauer, the only nominee to accumulate 70 percent of the votes required to be elected, comprised the entire class of 2000 inductees to the Southern Ohio PGA Hall of Fame at the recent fourth annual induction ceremonies in Beavercreek.
Hauer has been a name synonymous with golf in Cincinnati and Southern Ohio. After working for Jim Flick at Losantiville for five years, Hauer served as
Crest Hills head professional from 1968 to 1998. The last few years he has been teaching at Etters Practice Center.
Among his achievements: Section president and champion; Ohio Senior Open champion; multiple winner of Cincinnati Chapter Stroke and Match Play Championships and participant in national Senior PGA Championships and Club Pro Championships.
With his incredible commitment to the game, Crest Hills, SOPGA Chaper and Cincinnati Section, Hauer is most deserving of the this honor, SOPGA officials noted. What makes this recognition even more special is that it is truly a family award, as his wife, Gail, has played a visibly active role in the success of his career both off and on the course.
Hauer brings to 16 the number of SOPGA Hall of Famers, including Fairfield's Jim Slominski, Dick Plummer, Marty Kavanaugh, and Bob Foppe.
ćAlso: Geoff Hensley of Coldstream Country Club was inducted into the Cincinnati Chapter of the PGA Hall of Fame at the same annual SOPGA fall meeting. Hensley was awarded 74th PGA Master Professional July 24, 1990. He is one of only three Master Pros in the SOPGA Section. The program, begun in 1969, recognizes PGA members who make extra effort to improve themselves as golf pros.
CRC ENDORSES PACELLA: The Cincinnati Recreation Commission has endorsed Stephen J. Pacella, recently named director of golf operations in Cincinnati by Kemper Sports Management (KSM). KSM manages CRC's seven municipal golf facilities. Pacella succeeds Zachary Fink, who accepted a promotion with KSM in Chicago.
Pacella is a Cincinnati native who has been employed in the golf industry for 15 years. He became a PGA member in 1992 and has worked as a head pro since 1995, managing private and public golf facilities locally.
JIMMY WOODS REMEMBERED: The late Jimmy Woods, a Legends of Cincinnati Golf Honoree, is acknowledged in the new book Uneven Lies: The Heroic Story of African-Americans in Golf as among some two-dozen excellent players who had enough game to play on the PGA Tour but for one reason or another never did.
