Miami Notebook

Davis gets back his groove

By John Fay
The Cincinnati Enquirer

OXFORD — Miami point guard Doug Davis seems to have shaken off the rust from a season on the shelf.

Davis, a transfer from Michigan State who sat out last season, scored 16 points Saturday to lead Miami over Wisconsin-Green Bay. It was Davis' third straight game scoring in double figures after totaling two points in his previous two games.

“It's getting better,” said Davis, a 6-foot-3 junior. “I don't want to say I'm playing great and then have Dayton come in with a buzz saw.”

The Flyers are the RedHawks' next opponent.

Davis started the season so badly, he lost his starting job.

“He played well (Saturday),” said Miami coach Charlie Coles. “I want him to be a point guard. He's looking at half the floor. I told him it's real easy: Look at the rim and you see everything.”

JUGGLING ACT: Davis, Jason Grunkemeyer, Alex Shorts, Julius Johnson and Mike Ensminger started Saturday night against Wisconsin-Green Bay. That's the fourth different starting lineup Coles has used in Miami's six games.

MASON CAN PRACTICE: Chester Mason, a highly recruited point guard Miami signed, is allowed to practice with the team. Mason did not qualify academically to play, but as a partial qualifier, he is allowed to practice.

Larry Drake, the prize of last year's recruiting class, was not allowed to play or practice.

“It's really going to help Chester,” Miami coach Charlie Coles said. “He's doing very well.”

        Mason, a 6-foot-3, 176-pounder, was Ohio's Division I co-player of the year. He averaged a triple-double — 25 points, 13 rebounds and 11 assists — for Cleveland South last season.

SCHEDULE CHANGE: Miami's game with Bowling Green on Feb.3 will be televised by Channel 12, instead of the Jan.6 Marshall game. That means the start of the BG game will moved from 3 p.m. to noon.

FINAL ACT: The meeting between Miami and Wisconsin-Green Bay was the final of a series. The teams split the four games.

STREAKING: Saturday's win extended Miami's non-conference home winning streak to 20 games. The streak began after the RedHawks lost to Xavier 72-69 on Dec.11, 1993.
