Thoroughbreds hold on to win without Dawn
By Dave Schutte

Senior forward Jeff Colson scored the winning points on a 3-point field goal with 16.9 seconds remaining to give Newport Central Catholic a 39-38 victory over Bishop Brossart in the i-wireless Invitational Hoops Classic on Saturday at the Cintas Center.
Coach (Ron Dawn Sr.) told us during the timeout to take the best shot available, Colson said. I was open in the corner and let it fly.
Colson's points climaxed an uphill battle in the fourth quarter after Brossart erased a seven-point halftime deficit (34-29) with a 10-0 run to start the third quarter.
We've already played two games and wanted to go uptempo because of our conditioning, Brossart coach Willie Schlarman said.
It worked during the third quarter when we came back. But we had a hard time running the offense in the fourth quarter because of their defense.
Newport Central Catholic was without leading scorer Ronny Dawn, who has a severely sprained right ankle suffered in a scrimmage last week.
He said he expects to be able to play again by Friday.
But when coach Ron Dawn saw his son on the floor yelling with pain, he thought the season was over.
I just hoped it wasn't the knee, Coach Dawn said. Ronnie told me it was broken, but he has never had a sprain before.
Playing without Dawn appeared to have little effect on the Thoroughbreds during the first half when senior center Corey Myers scored 13 of his game-high 15 points to trigger the seven-point advantage.
We rely a lot on Ronnie, and it was different without him, Colson said. We came out a little timid in the third quarter, and that's when Brossart made the run.
Dawn was impressed with Colson's first game at forward.
We have to find a way to get Jeff the ball more, Dawn said. I wasn't upset that he took the 3-pointer, because we wanted to get off a quick shot to get more chances if we missed.
After the Mustangs took a 24-23 lead with 4:55 remaining in the third quarter, the Thoroughbreds didn't lead until Colson made the 3-pointer.
Brossart had a chance to win the game, but three shots from close in including two by Brandon Seiter during the final five seconds were off the mark.
We got several good looks at the finish, Schlarman said. We got another one up there, but the shots wouldn't fall.
