NKU loses national soccer final
The Cincinnati Enquirer
The Northern Kentucky University women's soccer team came up short in its bid for the national championship Saturday.
NKU was stunned on a goal with 15 seconds left and fell to UC San Diego 2-1 in the NCAA Division II national championship game Saturday at Miami Shores, Fla.
But NKU's second-place finish, on the heels of a fourth-place finish last season, has the Norse established as genuine power.
We're real proud of our team, NKU coach Bob Sheehan said. We're proud of the progress of our team and proud of the progress of our student-athletes in the program.
NKU finished 21-2-2 and graduates only one senior Malissa Stevenson of Anderson High, one of four players to make the all-tournament team.
The others were: Becky Schnieders, a freshman defender from Seton; Tricia Ruark, a junior midfielder from Seton; and Betsy Moore, a junior forward from McAuley.
Saturday's game began well for NKU. The Norse took a 1-0 lead on Denise Kunz's goal at 51:31, but they couldn't get past UCSD's Kami Poma again. Poma had to make only two saves in the game.
