Our Fearless Predictions: Cincinnati games

By Dave Schutte
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Previews and predictions for tonight's boys basketball games:

        • No. 1 Western Hills (0-1) vs. Walnut Hills (0-2)

WHEN/WHERE: 7:30 p.m. today, Western Hills High School, 2144 Ferguson Rd. Western Hills.

WHAT TO WATCH: The inability to score from the perimeter led to Western Hills losing its opener at Columbus Brookhaven Saturday. As a result, Western Hills may well see a variety of zones from Walnut Hills.

        PICK: Western Hills

        • No. 2 Div. II-IV Purcell Marian (1-0) vs. No. 2 Moeller (0-1)

WHEN/WHERE: 7:30 p.m. today, Moeller High School, 9001 Montgomery Rd. Montgomery.

WHAT TO WATCH: Moeller suffered a stunning buzzer-shot loss to Princeton in its opener. Ohio State-bound Matt Sylvester did his part for the Crusaders with 25 points and 11 rebounds.

Purcell Marian opened the season with a victory over Holy Cross despite getting only nine points from star Keith Jackson.

        PICK: Moeller

        • No. 3 St. Xavier (1-0) vs. No 10 (Div. II-IV) Badin (1-1)

WHEN/WHERE: 7:30 p.m., today, Hamilton Badin High School, 571 New London Rd. Hamilton.

WHAT TO WATCH: During an opening-game victory over Withrow, St. Xavier got surprising performances from Craig Cashen (14 points) and Mike Grogan (13) in support of star Jordan Cornette.

Coming off a 3-18 season, Badin fans were encouraged by an opening victory (73-68) over Talawanda before falling to St. Henry.

        PICK: St. Xavier

        • No. 4 Withrow (1-1) vs. Mt. Healthy (2-1)

WHEN/WHERE: 7:30 p.m. today, Cincinnati State University, Central Parkway.

WHAT TO WATCH: Picked to finish near the bottom in the Queen City Conference, Mount Healthy has gotten off to a 2-0 start with victories over Glen Este and North College Hill. Deon Short, Mark Lofton and B.J. Flowers have all played well.

After losing to St. Xavier in the opening game, Withrow rebounded with a victory over Columbus East at the All Ohio Slam-n-Jam Festival in Columbus.

        PICK: Withrow

        • No. 5 Elder (2-0) vs. Chaminade-Julienne (1-0)

        WHEN/WHERE: 7:30 p.m. today, Chaminade-Julienne H.S., 505 South Ludlow Street, Dayton.

WHAT TO WATCH: Chaminade-Jullienne, coming off a 4-19 season, won its opening game (Springboro) for the first time in six years.

Elder has had a balanced attack early with Jake Bazeley, Mike Mahon, Tim Schenke, Scott Benken and Phil Bengel all playing well.

        PICK: Elder
