SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Give this to Miami. It knows how to bounce back from a difficult loss.

The RedHawks, who suffered a deflating home defeat to Dayton Wednesday, knocked off 10th-ranked Notre Dame 73-64 Saturday.

Miami couldn't hold an eight-point lead with four minutes left against UD, but the RedHawks quickly put the loss behind them.

“After the Dayton game, Coach (Charlie) Coles came into the locker room and didn't say much,” said Mike Ensminger, who scored a career-high 16 points Saturday. “He told us we'd be practicing at 6:30 the next morning. It was a tough loss, but the great thing was the team came back ready to work.”

It paid off. Miami (4-4) outhustled the Irish throughout, especially on the boards, where they had a 44-26 advantage. Ensminger and Rich Allendorf each had six offensive rebounds.

Notre Dame (4-2) had a total of eight.

“Rebounding is all about effort. Offensive rebounding is all about effort and wanting the ball. If you do that, you've got a chance to win the game,” Ensminger said.

Ensminger finished with 10 rebounds and Allendorf had eight. Even Miami's guards did better than Notre Dame on the boards. Jason Grunkemeyer grabbed eight while freshman Matt Jameson, starting for injured Doug Davis, pulled down six. Ryan Humphrey led Notre Dame with six.

All-American Troy Murphy, who did not start as part of a punishment for using a fake identification to get into a bar, cut Miami's lead to 60-59 with a basket underneath with 4:45 left.

But Allendorf scored on a rebound off his own miss and Ensminger scored on an inbounds pass from under the basket with five seconds left on the shot clock to give the RedHawks a five-point lead.

Grunkemeyer made a pair of free throws and then stole the ball from Martin Ingelsby and scored on a fast-break layup to make it 68-61. The RedHawks hit four of five free throws in the final 64 seconds to extend the lead.

Grunkemeyer was among Miami's many stars. He had 12 points, eight rebounds, five assists and three steals. Julius Jones added 12 points and Allendorf had 10 points and eight rebounds. Ensminger had his third career double-double.

But the primary star may have been the freshman Jameson, who played only five minutes against Dayton.

He played all 40 minutes Saturday, scoring seven points with six rebounds and only two turnovers.

“I can't say enough of the job he did today,” Ensminger said. “To play 40 minutes like he did against Notre Dame ... ”

Jameson knew he'd play a lot after Davis was injured — although maybe not all 40 minutes. “When Doug went down in practice, we talked about it (starting at point),” Jameson said. “I knew I was going to have to play significant minutes, I just tried to prepare.”'

Miami, which upset then-No.17 Temple earlier this season, is now 5-6 against Top 25 teams under Coles.

Miami has held opponents to 68 points or less in every game this season. The 64 points was the fewest scored this season by the Irish, who had been averaging 87. Notre Dame lost to Indiana 86-78 on Tuesday.

The victory was Miami's third straight against Notre Dame. The RedHawks have one more game in a four-game series, traded for Miami pulling out of the Irish's football opener in 1995.

The RedHawks are off until Dec.19, when they play at Wright State.
