Owensby attorney won't name witnesses

The Cincinnati Enquirer

An attorney for the family of a College Hill man who died last month in police custody says it's too soon to release the names of witnesses the family thinks are being harassed.

Roger Owensby Sr., whose son Roger Jr. suffocated during a struggle with Cincinnati officers Nov. 7, wrote a letter this week to Mayor Charlie Luken. In it, he said three witnesses reported to him that they had been harassed by officers, including being required to take multiple lie-detector tests.

Mr. Owensby's lawyer, John Helbling, said he could not reveal the names of the witnesses until the investigation is completed. Doing so would taint it, he said.

A police spokesman said Tuesday that the division had not received Mr. Owensby's letter yet and that it could not look into the allegations without specifics. Hamilton County Prosecutor Mike Allen also said he would be glad to look into any allegations, but he needs more information to do so.
