Cyclones lose NHL affiliation

The Associated Press

MORRISVILLE, N.C. — The Carolina Hurricanes dropped the Cincinnati Cyclones as their top minor league affiliate.

The Hurricanes have sent prospects to the Cyclones the past two seasons. Carolina had an option with Cincinnati for the 2001-2002 season.

“We've had a very good relationship with the Cincinnati organization,” Carolina general manager Jim Rutherford said Monday. “It's worked very well for us. The IHL is a good development league for our players, but we're looking to make a change at this time.”

The Cyclones were the top farm team of the Florida Panthers from 1993-95.

        • Cyclones goaltender Corey Hirsch is the IHL/Edge Pro Gel Goaltender of the Week for the second time in three weeks. Hirsch went 3-0-0 with a 2.00 goals against average and a .944 save percentage in three games.
