Wright State 56, Miami 47

Foul trouble hurts RedHawks

The Cincinnati Enquirer

Miami is a deep team this season. But not deep enough to overcome foul trouble by all three of its frontcourt starters.

The RedHawks discovered that in a 56-47 loss to Wright State Tuesday night at Nutter Center.

One RedHawks starter, Alex Shorts, fouled out midway through the second half. Two other starters, Mike Ensminger and Julius Johnson, played with four fouls most of the second half.

Their absence opened things up for the WSU bigmen, 6-foot-6 Kevin Melson (21 points, eight rebounds) and 6-11 Israel Sheinfeld (18 points, six rebounds).

        WSU outrebounded Miami 30-17.

Miami, playing for the first time in 11 days, is now 4-5. The RedHawks had been off since upsetting then-No.10 Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind.

Eugene Seals led Miami with 12 points; Jason Grunkemeyer added 11. The RedHawks were 3-for-16 (18 percent) from 3-point range.

        Wright State improves to 8-1.

Miami played its second straight game without starting point guard Doug Davis, who is still recovering from a sprained foot.

Matt Jameson started in his place and played all 40 minutes.

Miami went out to a 17-9 lead. But Wright State recovered and went on a 12-2 run to tie it at 19 with just more than 11/2 minutes left in the half.

The RedHawks went into halftime up 22-20.

Miami hit 52 percent from the field in the first half and held the Raiders to 35 percent. The pace was much better suited to Miami than WSU, which came in averaging 82.4 points a game.

Wright State took its first lead at 24-22 two minutes into the second half.

0 After Shorts tied it, WSU ran off eight straight points to take a 32-24 lead with 13:12 left in the game.

At that point, Miami looked lost on offense.

The RedHawks missed their first six attempts from 3-point range. And with Shorts in foul trouble, things weren't any better inside.

Miami made two more charges. Grunkemeyer hit a 3 off the dribble. Thirty-five seconds later, Jameson hit a wide-open 3. That made it 32-30 with 12:11 left.

Melson, held to two points in the first half, took over. He scored seven straight points to give WSU a 39-32 lead.

Miami kept it in that range until Melson hit a short jumper to give Wright State the edge, 48-39, with 5:38 to play.
