Our Fearless Predictions for Cincinnati games

By Dave Schutte
The Cincinnati Enquirer

        • Summit Country Day (2-2, 2-2 MVC) vs. North College Hill (2-4, 2-1 MVC).

WHEN/WHERE: 7:30 p.m. today, North College Hill High School, 1620 Galbraith Rd., College Hill.

WHAT TO WATCH: Although North College Hill has lost four games, the Trojans have played Mount Healthy (Division I) and Roger Bacon (Division II), so their record could be deceiving.

The Trojans feature a balanced scoring attack with coach Ralph Kemphaus going with 10-to-11 players every game. Junior guard David Benedict is the leading scorer at 10 per game.

Summit Country Day is a senior-dominated team, but junior center Nick Dyer has spearheaded the Silver Knight attack, scoring 20 points or more in three of four games.

Both teams prefer an uptempo pace, so a high scoring affair is expected.

        PICK: North College Hill.

        • Hamilton (4-1) vs. Fairfield (1-4)

WHEN/WHERE: 8 p.m. today, Fairfield High School, 8800 Holden Rd., Fairfield.

WHAT TO WATCH: Unranked in the Enquirer's preseason poll and losers to Springfield South in the opening game, Hamilton has won four straight games, including an overtime victory over Middletown.

Balanced scoring, team play and defense have led to this unexpected success. Juniors E.J. Underwood and Nate Rusbosin are the leading scorers.

Fairfield is struggling under first-year coach Matt Wissman, whose team has shot miserably so far this season.

        PICK: Hamilton.

        • Middletown (5-1) vs. Milford (3-2)

WHEN/WHERE: 7:30 p.m. today, Milford High School, 1 Eagles Place, Milford.

WHAT TO WATCH: Ignored in the preseason Division I poll, the Middies have rallied behind Darrell Hunter and Kevin Moss to win five-of-six games.

Coming off a victory over Boone County, the Milford Eagles have been a good defensive team with balanced scoring. Adam Meranda, Anthony Robertson and 3-point specialist Jon Halter have helped the cause.

        PICK: Middletown.

        McNicholas (3-2) vs. Anderson (3-2)

WHEN/WHERE: 7:30 p.m. Saturday, McNicholas High School, 6536 Beechmont Ave., Mount Washington.

WHAT TO WATCH: Although McNicholas has lost two games, both were to teams (St. Xavier and Winton Woods) ranked in the Division I Top 10.

Under first-year coach Pat Stricker, the Rockets play a man-to-man defense. They also have a balanced scoring attack behind Geoff Hensley, Brian Chrin, Nate Dyment, Paul Sheehy and Bryan Cupito.

Anderson also has played well in early season games, also losing to Winton Woods. The one-two scoring punch of Chris Norwell and Kenny Riddell leads the Redskins' attack.

        PICK: McNicholas.

        • Madeira (5-1) vs. Reading (1-0)

WHEN/WHERE: 7:30 p.m. today, Reading High School, 810 East Columbia Ave., Reading.

WHAT TO WATCH: Off to an impressive start, Madeira has parlayed a stingy defense with balanced scoring attack that includes Bret Underwood, Robert Hern, Rob Tuke, Dan Luther, Carl Spence and Brandon Konieczka .

Because of the football team's success, Reading delayed the start of the basketball season until last week. The team opened with a 69-54 victory over Indian Hill.

DeShawn Wynn adds scoring strength to a Blue Devils team that includes Frankie Edwards, Keith Hershberger and Craig Wilking.

Madeira should be the favorite, but home court advantage could be a factor.

        Pick: Madeira.
