Cyclones stars called up

Team loses goalie, top goal scorer

The Cincinnati Enquirer

The Cincinnati Cyclones are losing two of their top players, but first they gave them a royal sendoff Thursday night. Six different players scored as the Cyclones buried Utah 6-1 at Firstar Center.

Goalie Corey Hirsch, who stopped 17 shots Thursday night, has been recalled by the NHL's Washington Capitals. And forward Greg Koehler, who had two assists, was called up to the Carolina Hurricanes and will dress for the tonight's game in Columbus. The 22-year-old leads the Cyclones with 15 goals and is second with 26 points.

Ian MacNeil triggered the game's first goal as he drove a Utah player to the ice and pounded a shot that resulted in a long rebound. Erik Cole jumped on the loose puck and scored his eighth goal of the season.

The Cyclones doubled their lead when Stefan Ustorf pulled an attack-zone faceoff back to the edge of the circle where Brad DeFauw drove in a wrist shot.

DeFauw's goal was his eighth of the season and his first game-winning goal as a professional.

Brian Felsner, Cincinnati's lone member of the IHL All-Star team, and Gilbert Dionne both scored power-play goals in the second period as the Cyclones pulled ahead 4-0.

Craig MacDonald's 10th goal of the year came in the third period's opening minute and drove Utah goaltender Mike Bales to the bench, where he was relieved by Rick Tabaracci.

The win was Cincinnati's 20th of the season. The team went 8-0-1 at home in December.
