Get to it

A guide to help make your day

Going out

At Jillian's: Brace yourself — it's a party on every floor at this multilevel party-plex with national recording artists Fastball cranking up the volume in the main party room. With help, don't you know, from Bare Jr. and local favorites Oval Opus. Elsewhere, look for two themed dance floors, games and buffets loaded with all kinds of stuff, including the good stuff health fanatics tell you not to eat. 9 p.m. today, 1200 Jillian's Way, Covington. $65 covers the whole joint. (859) 491-5388.

Classical: Slowing things down just a tad for those who want to tap a well-bred toe, the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra led by associate conductor John Morris Russell, takes concertgoers on a musical journey. Visit exotic locale No. 1 with Rossini's Italians in Algiers, then head east with Borodin's The Steppes of Central Asia. Music starts 7:30 p.m. today (note the early start time), Music Hall. $12-$49. 381-3300.

Local rock: The historic Southgate House rings in 2001 at full volume with the cream of the local talent crop. Including Ray's Music Exchange, Heavy Weather and Admiral Walker Music starts 9 p.m. today, continuing well into the wee hours, 24 E. Third St., Newport. $25. (859) 431-2201.

Family friendly: Cincinnati Zoo uncages a family-friendly party long enough before midnight to keep the kids from getting crabby. Festivities begin 5 p.m. today, then heat up with an early (9 p.m.) countdown featuring a mechanical monkey, not to be confused with Dick Clark. 3400 Vine St., Avondale. $11, $5.50 age 2-12. 281-4700.

Staying In

TV picks: Dick Clark, we mean. At age 200-something but looking somewhat less, he'll watch the ball drop with Boyz II Men, the Bangles, 98` and thousands of people milling about in Times Square. Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve, 11:35 p.m., Channels 9, 2.

Smile, Homer: Jim Forbes of VH1 is the guest voice in this episode that finds Homer and family the subject of a “Behind the Scenes” documentary. Scary thought, 'eh? The Simpsons, 8 p.m., Channels 19, 45.

Duchovny's vision: This is going to get confusing, so pay attention: David Duchovny's wife Tea Leoni stars with Garry Shandling as two actors portraying Scully and Mulder in a movie about the X-Files detectives. Mr. Duchovny wrote and directed this episode, a repeat from last season. The X-Files, 9 p.m., Channels 19, 45.

Planning Ahead

24 hours out: And this for singles on the prowl: The popular Encore Singles group will host a special New Year's Day dance for those looking to meet, greet, mix 'n' mingle. Bundle up tonight's hangover and head on out: 7-11 p.m. Monday,Mariner's Inn, 7967 Cincinnati-Dayton Road, West Chester. $9 includes snacks. 557-2133.
