Kenton Democrats hunt for chairman
FORT MITCHELL The Kenton County Democratic Party has set a timetable for selecting a new chairman.
The party's Search Committee will accept applications and nominations until 5 p.m. Jan. 12, said committee Chairman Nathan Smith of Fort Mitchell.
The committee plans to meet Jan. 15 to review the applicants and applications, interview finalists 7 p.m. Jan. 23 and recommend a new chairman to the party's Executive Committee on Jan. 30.
We're looking for someone who's dynamic, who can inspire others, who presents a positive public image, and who can attract more young people to the Kenton County Democratic Party, Mr. Smith said.
The new chair must also have the ability to raise campaign money and the time to commit to the position, he said.
Former Chairwoman Shirley Huelsmann resigned last month.
Anyone interested in the unpaid position should contact Mr. Smith at 342-5111, extension 10.
N.Ky. Girl Scouts kick off cookie sales
FLORENCE To kick off the annual cookie sale, Northern Kentucky Girl Scouts will hold an event at the Florence Mall 6-9 p.m. today.
The free event features games created by the girls, a magic show, cookie tasting and more.
To celebrate the Girl Scout tradition of giving back to the community, this year the Girl Scout Council of Licking Valley will kick off the council's second service project of the troop year, the Bring a Book project.
Girls will be collecting new and gently used books to give to area resource centers and agencies that serve needy children.
Crescent Springs looks to future
CRESCENT SPRINGS City Council will meet in special session Saturday to develop long-range planning goals for the city.
The meeting will be 8:30 a.m. at the Crescent Springs City Building, 739 Buttermilk Pike.
Park board cancels January meeting
FORT MITCHELL The city's park board has canceled its regular monthly meeting for January.
The board will next meet at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 7 in council chambers. It will continue to meet the first Wednesday of the month at 7:30 p.m.
The meetings are in council chambers October through April. May through September meetings are in the Ormsby Mitchel Park Pavilion.
Council reschedules because of holiday
FORT MITCHELL The city will hold a special council meeting 7:30 p.m. Monday in the city building at 2355 Dixie Highway.
The Jan. 15 council meeting has been canceled because it falls on the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.
Boone GOP chairman shares his secrets
HIGHLAND HEIGHTS Boone County GOP Chairman Ed Moore will talk about precinct organization and other keys to successful campaigns at Tuesday's meeting of the Campbell County Republican Party.
Boone County is the largest Republican county in Kentucky and the party has been successful at electing Republicans to county and state office.
The meeting will be at 7:30 p.m. at the Highland Heights City Building, 175 Johns Hill Road.

Diamond Lake Resort sold for $1.2 million
OWENSBORO The owners of Diamond Lake Resort say they have sold the 145-acre property near West Louisville to a California man for $1.2 million.
The sale comes after owner Jim Yeckering III listed the property on the Internet auction site eBay.
Mr. Yeckering said Craig Schwab has signed papers and made a nonrefundable $50,000 deposit on the property. Mr. Yeckering said he understands the new owner doesn't plan any major changes. Mr. Schwab couldn't be reached for comment.
The property includes homes, a restaurant and bar, a theater, motel rooms, apartments, campsites, go-kart tracks, fishing lakes and a swimming park.
Murder suspect arrested after standoff
GLASGOW A standoff outside an electric cooperative office between a man suspected in a fatal shooting and police ended peacefully Thursday morning, police said.
Nate Wood, 32, of Glasgow was brought out the front window of a rural house outside Glasgow about 9:20 a.m. CST after police used tear gas in the house, Kentucky State Police Trooper Dwaine Barnett said.
Mr. Wood was charged with murder, attempted murder and kidnapping. He allegedly took a woman hostage Wednesday, but released her unharmed several hours later, Trooper Jaman Childers said.
Anna Jones, of Glasgow was killed and Fred Tisdale was injured outside the Farmers Rural Electric Cooperative by gunfire, Trooper Nick Stephens said. The two had been sitting in an automobile outside the cooperative at the time, he said.
The shootings were apparently triggered by some type of domestic dispute, Trooper Barnett said.
Elderly couple beaten and robbed
RICHMOND Police are looking for three people who allegedly barged into the home of an elderly Waco couple, held them hostage and robbed them of about $300.
Kentucky State Police said two men and a woman pushed their way into the couple's rural Madison County home after Samuel Rogers, 83, answered a knock at the door at 8 a.m. EST Tuesday.
Intruders tied him up and beat him, said his wife, Sarah, 86. They left after an hour, taking their cash and leaving the home ransacked, she said.
Police say the robbers were driving a late 1970s Lincoln or Ford LTD.
