'Survivor' a Tristate favorite
Only Norfolk, Va., was more faithful
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Even without a local hero to cheer, Cincinnatians were among the faithful viewers of the original Survivor.
Sure, the show was popular everywhere. It was the top-rated show in the country last summer, drawing 51.7 million viewers in normally sleepy August.
But the only city that showed more interest than Cincinnati in Survivor was Norfolk, Va. That was because retired Navy SEAL Rudy Boesch, who was among the final three on the island, was from Norfolk. As viewership grew every week for 16 consecutive weeks, Cincinnati viewers eclipsed Norfolk on June 14, giving the show its top audience for that episode.
The show aired from May 31 to Aug. 23 registering Nielsen ratings (percentage of TV households) from 12.6 to 40.4. High share (percentage of TV sets in use) was 57. At one point audiences exceeded 174,400 Tristate homes.
CBS executives hope to gather early ratings with Survivor 2 by broadcasting it immediately after the Super Bowl on Jan. 28.
