Fires leave 2 dead, family homeless

Two major Tristate fires over the weekend left two people dead near Versailles, Ind., and a Middletown family homeless. A third blaze in a Middletown home caused $15,000 in damages.

Ripley County dispatchers received a 911 call about 4 a.m. Sunday reporting a fire in the 3600 block of E. County Road, four miles southeast of Versailles.

The names of the two people who died in that blaze are being withheld pending notification of family. The Versailles Fire Department found the bodies after the fire was extinguished.

The cause of the fire and deaths is under investigation by the Ripley County coroner and state fire marshall.

A fire Saturday evening caused about $100,000 damages to a home owned by Connie Stauffer in the 2400 block of Grand Avenue in Middletown.

The Middletown Fire Department, called about 11:40 p.m. Saturday, found heavy smoke coming from the two-story frame home and flames shooting from the rear windows. The fire, which remains under investigation, started in a home office.

Ms. Stauffer and her son were not home at the time. The American Red Cross was called to assist them.

Yet another fire Sunday caused about $15,000 in damage to a different Middletown home.

Firefighters were called to the Harrison Street home of Kim Pyle about 3 a.m. Sunday after an unattended candle apparently ignited furniture there.

Ms. Pyle told firefighters she was next door when her son awoke and smelled smoke. He called firefighters after finding a small fire on top of a chest of drawers.

One firefighter received minor injuries, but he was not hospitalized.
