City to study area around Rookwood

By Walt Schaefer
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Question: Going north on Edwards Road and making a left turn into Rookwood Commons and Rookwood Pavilion is nearly impossible unless you turn on the red light. Is a left-turn arrow planned? — Marilyn Woycke, Sharonville

Answer: Cincinnati Traffic Engineer Steve Bailey said the recent growth and popularity of the Rookwood developments have brought more traffic to the area and the city is reviewing the possibility of providing a left-turn arrow into the developments. The city is waiting for completion of an office building under construction to assess its impact before making a final decision. A recommendation should be made by early March.

        Q. The left-turn arrow from Central Parkway to Main Street is entirely too short, and motorists who work in the area often are waiting two cycles just to make the turn. Can anything be done about this? - Thomas J. Raptis, Over-the-Rhine

        A. Mr. Bailey said this intersection and others along Central Parkway create signal issues because the parkway is divided by a wide island. Part of the green signal sequence for Main Street requires left turns to be restricted for a longer than normal time to allow pedestrians to cross the wide parkway. Secondly, the parkway carries more traffic than Main Street, so more green sequence time must be given to the parkway to maintain adequate traffic flow. Mr. Bailey said engineers are aware that delays for left turns onto Main Street exist, but the signal timing is at its most effective.

        Q. A left-turn signal is needed on U.S. 42 at Dimmick Road in West Chester Township. Are there any plans for one? - Robin Carver, West Chester Township

        A. Kim Patton, spokeswoman for the Ohio Department of Transportation, said the state has authorized a review at this location to determine whether a signal is warranted. Once the review is completed next year, a decision on signal improvements will be made.
