Get to It

A guide to help make your day

GOING OUT
David Cale: Cincinnati's hip factor bams up a notch, and it gets a brand new alternative theater series all in one night. To wit: Obie award winning playwright and monologist Mr. Cale is the hip factor with his way off center routines. They open Playhouse in the Park's cabaret-style Mondays (through March) of performance artists, improv comedy and more. Happy hour at 6:30 p.m., show at 7 p.m. today,Rosenthal Plaza. $8. 421-3888.

Chamber players: Hear the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra toot its own horn. Actually it's mega-horn star David Jolley tooting, music director Mischa Santoraconducting, and CCO members playing Bartok, Strauss and Haydn. 7:30 p.m. today, Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy, 1225 Elm St., Sycamore Township. $4-$20. 723-1182.

Plants for sale: The holidays are over but Krohn Conservatory's plants are alive and well. They wouldn't dare die up there. But Krohn needs room for its next show, so it's selling out at the popular End of Show Sale. Especially poinsettias and Christmas greenery priced to sell. 10 a.m. today, Eden Park. 421-4086.

Staying In
TV picks: Relive the Jazz age with the debut of Ken Burns' toe-tapping 18 1/4-hour PBS documentary (9 p.m., Channels 48, 54, 16), followed by a Preservation Hall Jazz Band special (10:30 p.m., Channels 48, 16). • TV Critic John Kiesewetter has more musical notes: Britney Spears hosts the American Music Awards (8-11 p.m., Channels 9, 2), while Turner Classic Movies has restored Elvis Presley's 1970 concert film, Elvis: That's the Way It Is (8 p.m., TMC).

               Web site of the day

Showing WHAT?? Here's something you don't see every day. Probably don't even want to. It's an online museum of 412 air-sickness bags from ALM to Zambia Airways. Appetizing thought, "eh? And probably not the best site to go visiting at breakfast. The site also has a collection of sea-sickness, space-sickness and movie vomit bags. www.airsicknessbags.com

               Planning Ahead

24 hours out: They call it Closer, but it's really about distances, this dark take on modern relationships. Playhouse in the Parkopens previews of the bleak tale by acclaimed playwright Patrick Marber. 8 p.m. Tuesday, Thompson Shelterhouse Theatre, Eden Park. $26. 421-3888.

48 hours out: High-energy rap and painted faces set to the dicey tune of “parental advisory” lyrics take center stage when Insane Clown Posse hits town. at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Bogart's, 2621 Vine St., Corryville Club. $20-$22.50. 562-4949.

72 hours 'til Thursday: Herewith a little lesson in history thanks to University of Cincinnati faculty member David Stradling. “Making Mountains: New York City and the Catskills,” part of Cincinnati Museum Center's history series, tells it all. 7:30 p.m., Newsreel Theater, Union Terminal.
