Registration begins for Flying Pig relay

The Cincinnati Enquirer

Registration begins today for the open division of the Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon's Ernst & Young Relay Event. The event is limited to 200 teams. Teams will be registered on a first come, first serve basis.

Race director Rich Williams said the relay is expected to book up quickly because it gives people an opportunity to run as part of a team.

“Each member runs a six to eight mile leg of the race,” he said. “They all have to count on each other — it's invaluable incentive and a great morale boost and a whole lot of fun.”

The relay will begin at 6:30 a.m. on May 6 in downtown Cincinnati at the same time the individual Marathon participants start. Relay racers also will follow the same course, but three spots will be designated for the switch from one team member to another.

Relay members will hand off a timing device. The segments:

        • Leg 1. From the starting line at Seventh Street, between Elm and Race streets, to the Eden Park Overlook. (6.3 miles).

        • Leg 2. Eden Park Overlook to Delta/Columbia Parkway. (5.8 miles.)

        • Leg 3. Delta/Columbia Parkway to West Liberty Street. (5.9 miles.)

        • Leg 4. West Liberty to the finish line at Yeatman's Cove. (8.2 miles.)

Runners may apply for the Ernst & Young Open Relay Division online at www.flyingpigmarathon.com or download an application from the Web site and mail it. Applications will also be available at the Marathon offices and area running stores. The team registration fee is $200. Corporate relay team fees are $500.

        For more information, call 721-7447.
